What are Sealants?

Patient getting dental sealant applied.Dental sealants are thin protective coatings that are applied just to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. They are mostly beneficial to pediatric patients as a way to prevent cavities, but they can be just as helpful to adults who have weaker and more vulnerable teeth. Sealants are BPA-free and safely used in the dental field. They work to form a protective layer over the teeth, preventing plaque and bacteria from causing a cavity and the need for subsequent fillings, root canals and extractions.

Why are Sealants necessary?

A sealant is helpful in that it protects vulnerable teeth. Prevention is key when it concerns dental health, so sealants work to prevent the need for fillings, root canals and even full extractions because of tooth decay. You may need sealants if you have weaker and more vulnerable teeth or if you already have a lot of fillings placed. Children who don’t have the best oral hygiene and dietary habits will especially benefit from sealants.

Who is a candidate for Sealants?

Both children and adults are good candidates for sealants. Sealants are applied in liquid form and hardened to a secure and smooth finish. They are totally clear, so no one will know that you have them on your teeth but you and the dental team. Dr. Bhandaru can check your teeth to see if you would benefit from sealants and you can always request them at your next checkup appointment.

What happens during the procedure for Sealants?

First, Dr. B will examine the teeth for any signs of decay. Sealants cannot be placed over teeth that have cavities, since a filling or root canal is necessary before the procedure can be done. The teeth will be cleaned and dried to allow the sealant to be placed easier. The sealant is then applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth using a soft applicator brush. The liquid is hardened with a curing light and is considered protected from bacteria and decay. Most sealants last for anywhere from one to three years and can be safely reapplied if needed.
