Fluoride is an incredibly vital element to the strength and resiliency of your teeth. Most patients who drink fluoridated water and who use fluoride-containing dental products get enough fluoride to protect their teeth. However, if you are prone to cavities or don’t get enough fluoride, additional treatment can be helpful. Fluoride is useful in preventing tooth decay and the need for fillings, root canals and even extractions.
Fluoride treatment may be needed because you don’t get enough fluoride through your dental products or the water you drink. If you’re susceptible to tooth decay, it may be recommended that you have additional treatment throughout the year. Children, in particular, will benefit from fluoride treatments since they are at most risk for cavities. Fluoride treatments are done within minutes at Carrollton Smiles and can be applied at each of your bi-annual checkup appointments.
Children should have fluoride treatments at each of their checkup appointments. This prevents decay from occurring and resulting in the need for fillings or extractions. Adults are good candidates for additional fluoride treatments as well, but this may only be recommended on an as-needed basis. You are more than welcome to request fluoride treatment at your next appointment with us.
After a cleaning and exam, we will brush liquid fluoride onto your teeth. Fluoride comes in many flavors including cake and caramel flavors!
You will be instructed to avoid eating as well as drinking for about 30 minutes after the treatment has been applied. This allows the fluoride to fully strengthen the teeth and provide optimal protection. You can have this treatment done at most of your appointments or on an as-needed basis. Prevention is key in maintaining a healthy, bright smile and fluoride is crucial in providing that extra layer of protection.
